Structural Engineering

Structural engineering is a vital part of the design and construction of buildings and civil structures. A structural engineer is responsible for being up to date on the latest design codes and best practices, with  public safety always as the primary goal.

 

The structural engineer strives to produce designs that are stable and can withstand the applied loads and deformations, such as those from wind and earthquakes. After public safety, serviceability, buildability and cost effectiveness need to be addressed. These principles apply across the spectrum of structures, from single family homes to large commercial, industrial and institutional buildings and civil structures.

 

One of the most basic concepts in structural engineering is that of the "Load Path", where a structure system is only as strong as it's weakest element, or in the analogy of a chain, it's weakest link.
